Our story
For more than 30 years, our expert team has worked with some of the world’s busiest airports and airport safety teams, as well as with airlines, regulators, and pilots. We are also involved with numerous national and international wildlife management committees, including ICAO’s wildlife management expert group, the Australian (AAWHG) and North American bird strike committees.

Phil Shaw, our founder and director, is a wildlife biologist, with more than 30 years’ experience partnering with clients around the world to provide them with practical solutions for managing the hazards safely, reducing the ever-present risk of wildlife strikes, which can result in aircraft damage, and potentially, loss of human life.
It was a costly $8 million ibis strike on a Qantas A300 at Gold Coast Airport in December 1995, that led to Avisure’s founding. Phil was asked to develop a plan to manage the ibis population, particularly around the Gold Coast Airport, and went on to undertake assessments of other Australian airports. The disbanding of the Civil Aviation Authority’s Bird Hazard Investigation Unit in 1991 had left a gap in expertise, and ‘slowly and surely’, Phil says, ‘we became the “go-to” for wildlife hazard management in Australia’.
Success in Australia with Avisure’s wildlife hazard management approach led to growing global demand for their expertise with projects in Asia, the Middle East, Africa, Europe, the Pacific and North America. We employ a growing team of wildlife hazard management experts who also have deep understanding of aviation operations.
Phil is passionate about the need for industry to take an integrated approach to wildlife hazard management. ‘Obviously, airports are a major player in managing habitat around take-off and landing areas, but the approach now is too airport centric. ATC, pilots, regulators, plus those responsible for land use in the vicinity of the airport — they’re all part of the puzzle. Change is happening, but it’s not integrated systematically. We also need to embrace technologies and AI that allows us to detect, classify, track and predict wildlife movements, so that we can have operational responses from the control tower, the cockpit and from the ground-based teams that manage wildlife.’
